History of the Trail

Kings Mountain is a city rich with resources, yet some are not easily accessible to the public. Our Gateway Trail will utilize 8 to 10 miles of greenway to provide a connection from Downtown Kings Mountain to City Lake, Davidson Lake, Crowder’s Mountain State Park, Kings Mountain State Park, and Kings Mountain Military Park. This greenway will be built through the combined resources of the Kings Mountain Gateway Trails, Inc., the City of Kings Mountain, Cleveland County, the North Carolina Parks and Recreation Trust Fund, the North Carolina and South Carolina State Park Services, and the National Park Service.

We will also utilize another unique asset to connect these resources, our mining history. This route offers tranquil views skirting the rim of an inactive quarry, following old mining roads. Chemetall Foote Corporation is a key corporate partner in this greenway, donating over 85 acres of mining property and providing access across I-85.  The trailhead is provided by Martin-Marietta, Inc. and will feature parking, restrooms and a picnic shelter. Without this corporate support our dream could not become a reality.
