The first phase consisting of the trail head, picnic area and 1 1/2 to 2 miles of trail, part asphalt, part packed gravel is now open. This has been a long time coming, approximately 6 years. The Kings Mountain Gateway Trails, Inc. received 3 generous grants along with community support, foundations, City and County and State investments, and 2 minning companies, and two other private landowners have all joined the Gateway Trails group to make this happen. Martin Marietta Minning Company provided the land for the trailhead and Chemetall Foote Corporation provided a very large part of the first phase and the actual trail including a private bridge across Hwy. I-85 to the south of Kings Mountain. The City of Kings Mountain built the very beautiful restrooms and office facility and volunteers headed up by Ronnie Whetstine of W & W Contractors built the picnic shelter. The Kings Mountain Gateway Trails group has worked very hard on all aspects of this wonderful project that is more that just a trail, it is a park with picnic grounds, restrooms, water fountain, parking and drop off area, & handicapp accessible. |

The official ceremony will begin at 10:00 am on November 7th with a ribbon cutting and ceremony. Local parks and vendors will have displays along with other exciting events. Please watch this site for further details. A rain date of Sunday November 8th at 1:00 pm has been set. Watch this site for any weather related news.

This is about one of the best projects Kings Mountain has ever done. Being a nature girl I am sure the vist the park often as I can. The natural surroundings are very medatative and soothing. Me and mother were (hiking) grew tired and set on a Rock that shaped like a bench. Will there be more Seats for people who has not walked in years? When will the next grand opening take place? I can not wait!!!!

Living in Kings Mountain for six years now (originally from Shelby and Polkville area), I have come to pride my town for its natural beauty and unique history. Kings Mountain could, and is, becoming a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. It excites me to see such a grand undertaking practically right outside my back door. I hope that this venture will revitalize the beautiful downtown area and bring about a new-found sense of it's history as well.
If I may make a suggestion, I would like to see the trail become more focused on mountain biking and possibly a part devoted to ATV and 4WD Off-road vehicles. Kings Mountain Battleground, State Park and Crowder's Mountain Parks are already very hiker-driven areas and well saturated with those types of trails. A few miles of off-road area could provide supplemental revenue, as other trails require a day pass or membership to use the trails. I would also like to see the unused quarry lake available for use in the future. A stone staircase or long, windy path would be wonderful and give visitors a glimpse into Kings Mountain's mining history. Plus, it could bring in canoeing and kayaking since there is a road already joining it. Just my two-cents.
I totally love the trails and the vision!

Nancy and I (and dog) finally made it to the Kings Mountain Greenway late yesterday.
Fantastic!
I particularly like the juxtaposition between the "natural" elements and the working industrial landscape. It is very similar to projects I have visited in England, The Netherlands and Germany.
Y'all have done a great job and created a wonderful asset for the community.
